I have a confession. I’m terrible about using plastic shopping bags from the grocery store. I don’t feel as guilty about paper bags from Trader Joes since I use those for recycling but the plastic bags from other stores are a problem.
I have reusable bags that never get used. They sit on a shelf gathering dust and never find their way to my car. What’s worse is I’m a spur of the moment grocery shopper. So, if they aren’t in the car I don’t have them to use. And inevitably, the shopper in front of me has their 6 bags all ready to go and I feel horrible.
So, I’m turning over a new leaf. My bags are in the car. Yay!
They aren’t expensive and I’ll give you some links to the products I use at the end of this article because this small step has led to others.
I have purchased reusable produce bags. Yep, I'm going to stop using those annoying plastic produce bags that are never where I need them in the produce section of the store.
I’m also switching to a biodegradable cat litter and poop bags so I can clean the cat box without guilt. I can throw away his litter box waste directly into the garbage to go into the landfill where it will naturally decompose. No more plastic grocery bags of poopy clay.
If I had a compost area I’d do that instead but as an urban desert dweller with no place for a garden, composting isn’t practical.
And, finally, while I was researching the cat care issue I also discovered biodegradable kitchen garbage bags. So, I'm using those too.
What’s my point with this rambling confessional? I guess just that one decision to change has led me to several changes. And, I think that’s the way changing ourselves and our lives works. One step leads to another and another until you look back and see the path has totally changed. If we take control of the changes then we take control of the path.
My decisions today are shaping my tomorrows. And my tomorrows are full of adventure with less waste and less expense. Next time I’ll tell you a little more about me, Scott and our future van cat, Wicked. We’re van shopping!
