If you've read our "About" page you know our ultimate goal is to leave "normal" life behind and become nomads. Downsize from our large houses into a 19-20 something foot van or RV.
Are we crazy? Maybe.
Is it risky? Probably.
Will we be happier? Healthier? Less stressed? Have more fun?
We believe we will. But, there are so many choices! 19-20 foot "B" or a larger "B+" or a "C"?
There's a certain romance to living in a very small van together. My imagination runs to lazy mornings and low gas mileage. But having some extra space for both of us to move around each other with a larger kitchen and a real shower has appeal too.
Scott and I have looked at countless videos and websites. We have to go used because there is no way we can afford $100,000 plus for a new van. But we have certain criteria we won't compromise on.
First, it has to have either an area that converts to a large enough bed or has a permanently installed bed. No twin beds for us!
Second, we want a built-in bathroom. Not something that converts to a bathroom area but a separate space with or without a separate shower. We are both pretty private about our bathroom needs and want that door with the ability for the other person to still move around.
Third, we only need two seats for driving. We don't need three or four. For us, that's just space that could be used for storage or kitchen area.
Fourth, storage. Storage and more storage. We want outside and inside storage. Not because we intend to take so much with us but so we can have what we need when we need it. Which takes us to...
Five, either solar included or the area and ability to add it. We want to be able to go off the grid and "boondock" for at least a couple of weeks at a time. So, solar and water are crucial. We do have a couple of makes and models we like but we aren't ready to jump yet. If any of you have ideas or suggestions we welcome your input.
We have started to downsize and change over to things in our homes that will work in our small home on wheels. But I'll review some of those in a different article. My one rule is "no glass." To harken back to my sustainable living theme; plastic isn't the problem. Plastic that gets thrown away is the problem. So, making our van safe by using plastic products rather than glass is one of my goals.
So, there you are. A glimpse into our thoughts and dreams. If you have advice or suggestions please let us know.
